About the event
Why are book challenges and censorship bills escalating across the country, specifically targeting literature in our public libraries and schools that shines a light on the lived experiences of the LGBTQIA+ community and people of color? How can we counter the hysteria and lies that drive these harmful attempts of erasure with understanding and education?
Join us for Banning Books, Erasing Lives: Panel discussion and Book Giveaway on Wednesday, June 15th at the Human Rights Education Institute where we will delve into these topics and why we must take action locally wherever the freedom to read and the right to be included in public spaces are under threat.
Doors will open at 5:30 PM for this FREE educational event. Registration is required via Eventbrite and is limited to 80 people.
Our panel discussion interspersed with short videos will highlight the perspectives of parents, youth, educators, librarians, and mental health professionals.
At the event, we are featuring 10 frequently challenged books with recognized literary merit suggested for different age groups in both a Book Giveaway and educational display. Stay tuned for an opportunity to donate selected books for local parents raising an inclusive generation.
Banning Books, Erasing Lives is a featured educational program of our CDA4Pride 2022 campaign with the theme "EXIST LOUDER!" to raise awareness and celebrate Pride Month.
