2020 Transgender Awareness Week & Transgender Day of Remembrance

This year, Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR) will be observed on Friday, November 20 to honor the memory of the transgender people whose lives were lost in acts of anti-transgender violence. Transgender Awareness Week is November 13 - 19.

TDOR 2020 honors those who died between October 1, 2019, and September 30, 2020. 47 known lives were taken in the United States and 386 worldwide. This includes death by violence, by self-harm, those who died in ways yet to be determined, and sadly, this year, from COVID-19.

In years past, North Idaho Pride Alliance and partners have organized in-person TDOR vigils. Due to the continuing challenges of the COVID pandemic, we are recommending this year two virtual options to honor the memory of trans people worldwide and raise awareness of the prejudice, discrimination, and violence that affect the transgender community.

For Transgender Awareness Week: Watch “Disclosure” on Netflix

This year for Transgender Awareness Week, GLAAD is encouraging everyone to watch the documentary DISCLOSURE on Netflix. The feature from director Sam Feder and executive producer Laverne Cox explores the history of trans representation in TV and film in unprecedented form, revealing how Hollywood simultaneously reflects and manufactures people's deepest anxieties about gender.

Through personal interviews with 30 transgender thought leaders on screen and a production model that prioritized hiring trans people into crewed positions--offering fellowship opportunities when that wasn't possible, DISCLOSURE invites viewers to see the dynamic interplay between trans representation on screen, the resulting cultural attitudes off-screen, and real-world consequences of these depictions on trans people's lives as told revolutionarily from trans people's own experiences and perspectives.
